Bikes

I will never forget for my 9th birthday I was given a purple Schwinn Sting Ray with a sparkly silver banana seat and a basket with flowers on the front. I was thrilled but as you can see my brother wasn't. My parents captured the moment in a snapshot. I love this photo.

A black-and-white photo of two children, one on a bicycle.

Shortly after I received my gift, my parents gave in to my brother and got him this humongous cruiser bike. He could barely reach the peddles. But from his expression you can tell he doesn't give a darn. He is so proud of this bike.

I picked up an old cruiser the other day and it made me think of this old photo. Not sure what we will do with the bike yet, but somehow we will have to make it a tribute to our brother!

Vintage Refridgerators

Remember the post we did on the vintage fridge we found? After a little research we think we have it pegged for a 1949 Philco. As we researched we were also looking for inspiration on what to do with it. Here are a few pics we would like to share.

Robins Egg Blue

Cotton Candy Pink

Sweet, simple two tone versions.

This is a little wild, but very creative.

Two Tone Pink (one of our favs).

Polka dots are so popular. Very retro!

This one is for the MAN CAVE!

Should we leave it white?

This could possibly be the winner!

Every kitchen needs a little whimsey... we think a vintage fridge will give it that perfect touch.

Don't you agree?

Racheal does!!

All Funky Junk Sisters voted that this is the best idea of all!

An Ever Growing Collection of Vintage Blankets

I gotta confess that I am obsessed with vintage wool blankets.

I began collecting them awhile back when I snatched up a few

at an estate sale with a large stack of them!

They are beautiful and so useful.

They are great for snuggling on the sofa, but they are also wonderful to take along to a football game or a picnic. Often times I'll use them at the end of a bed for a punch of color or as a tablecloth when I'm wanting a cozy look.

Hunting for them is fun too. I keep an eye out for them at garage sales,

thrift shops and antique stores.

They can be repurposed into many things too.

Check out this FAB chair from Red Barn Merchantile!

And this magnificent pillow listed by The Cottage Workroom on Etsy.

My collection of wool blankets is growing all the time...do you collect anything?

I would love to hear about it!

Ever Wonder Why We Started All This Junkin Stuff? Here's A Look Back....

This blog is dedicated to FUNKY JUNK SISTER #1, my mother, Dixie. She is the original "Junk Queen".

She taught me how to decorate on a budget. That means that you went rummaging at garage sales, estate sales and flea markets all the time. And I do mean all of the time, if we were in the car with mom we were on the hunt. She would turn in at every garage sale sign she saw, and as kids, believe me, that wasn't always a good thing. She would hear the whining too. "Not another one! Let's go home!"

If my brothers were in the car, oh Lordy watch out. They would make her miserable all the way home for that last stop. The trip home wasn't a short one either. We lived in a small town north of Spokane, Washington so the ride home took about 35 minutes.

When we arrived back at the farm everyone that didn't make the trip into town with her was forced (seriously forced) to see all of her new finds.

Back then I didn't appreciate the things she found. Now it's a different story.... now I have taken all that she taught me and turned it into money, treasures, or heirlooms for my family. Thanks Mom, I finally get it!!
